What is a Dark Retreat?

A dark retreat is a return to the innermost parts of ourselves. It is a period of time spent in complete darkness, free from the outer distractions that often define how we move through the world. When we remove light, stimulation, and the mirrors that reflect who we think we should be, what we are left with is what is true.

Darkness asks nothing of us, yet reveals everything. In the absence of light, the body becomes more attuned, and a deeper kind of listening begins to emerge. It provides opportunity for a pure encounter with our thoughts, our long-held beliefs, our protective mechanisms, and the stories we have carried.

Darkness reveals, reflects, and invites us to meet what has been left unattended. It welcomes the full, unfiltered experience of being human. Within this, there is space. Space to feel, to listen, and to remember. Space to unravel the effort of trying to be anything other than who we are in this very moment.

Some may meet a quiet peace in the dark, while others may feel the raw edges of long-guarded parts. There is no right way to journey through the dark. Each experience is entirely personal, shaped by what is ready to emerge. Darkness does not rush or demand, it meets each person exactly as they are, with an intuitive precision for what is ready to be met.
